Neutral Master Bedroom Oasis

Surprisingly, this client has a lot of colors happening in the rest of her home. For her master bedroom, she requested a neutral relaxing space to get away to. We started with the flooring and wall paint (Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige). The carpeted flooring is a soft beige color with a light repetitive pattern running through it. The wood tones adds a warmth to the space and a heavy grounded feeling with the size of the headboard and night stands.

Tropical Cabana Guest House Design

Here, I designed a Tropical Oasis for a client's guest house. Using her existing grey laminate plank flooring and already painted aqua walls, I wanted to combine tropical textures (rattan & wicker) with soothing whites and a pop of color - CORAL. Nothing says tropical more than bright color combinations and aqua and coral go together perfectly.

The headboard is the most important piece to a bedroom. It needs to make a statement as the main focal point and start the theme to your room. I know I wanted wicker but I needed it to have a gray undertone to match the existing flooring. This one from World Market is perfect.

This client hired me to refurnish her new home. Upon living in her new home she decided she needed to renovate her master bathroom. I was very excited to get started on her design. She has a very fun style of rustic charm with a bit of modern glam.

I started my design as usual at the tile store. Her only request was for slate tile on the floor. Keeping with her modern side, I found this great slate-looking tile in a 12" x 24" size. Stacking it will create that modern twist to the overall rustic design.

Rustic Mid-Century Modern Living Room

How great is this furniture?! I have recently discovered a new furniture company called Poly & Bark where I found this amazing sofa and accent chairs. I cannot believe I am just now finding them. They have so much to offer: lot's of Mid-Century modern mixed in with contemporary, rustic, bohemian, etc. Pretty much a little bit of everything for every style.

The client I put this living room together for was on the hunt for Mid-Century modern chairs and a leather sofa. She has this very large abstract painting that she wants to incorporate into the room. While it is more on the modern side, I jumped at the opportunity to mix styles (my favorite way to design).

When you enter this room of the client's home, you will see the back of the chairs so I wanted to make sure they have something to offer on the backside. This Poly & Bark Verity Lounge Chair is just stunning and has everything I was looking for. The sleek straight lines of the white linen cushion is juxtaposed with the soft curved wooded arms. And the detail of the vertical slats on the backside will be so chic in this rustic-modern living room.

Picture
This sofa... Let's just take a moment to embrace her beauty. With minimal detailing, this cognac tan Italian leather sofa is breath-taking. The square-shape frames the tufted cushion and bolstered arm pillows perfectly and the rounded back cushions are just begging you to kick your feet up and relax. The bold shape of the sofa looks light as a feather, almost floating atop the slender wood legs.

Classic Living Room Design Board

This is actually for my personal family room! I want a rug and coffee table so I put together my own Design Board to make sure everything is cohesive. I already have the sofa, the chandelier, the peacock pillow, and a brick fireplace. The remaining elements are the items I would like to add.

I would call my home style Transitional. It is a pretty Traditional home based on a Williamsburg Colonial house. When we renovated it a couple years ago, we were very careful to stay true to it's original design theme with of course a few updated elements.

I actually have this sofa in the sectional layout and it is the best! It is so deep and comfortable. I would highly recommend it. When you remove the back pillows it is actually the size of a twin bed. I have had several guests sleep on it.

We have a very high cathedral ceiling in this room so we needed a very large lighting fixture to fill the space. I am so happy with the one we have. It has just enough sparkle that is toned down with the soft individual light shades. The overall width of 45" was the perfect size for our space!
Picture

I already have blue accents throughout my home so I wanted a rug with some blue in it but not too much. I think this one will be perfect. I like the traditional pattern but the distressing along the edges brings in a contemporary feel.

We do not have a coffee table, purposely because we wanted to allow space for our crawling baby. Well all kids are walking so it is time! We have very large custom wood built-in bookshelf that covers an entire wall so I want the coffee table to have that same wood color. I think this one is perfect.

I really like this poofs. I plan to store them under the coffee table. I picture the kids pulling them out for extra seating when we play games at the table, but they will probably stack them and climb on them etc. Either way, they bring in some texture and a cute element to the space.

The chandelier is the only lighting in this room so I want to bring in some side ambient lighting with a floor lamp. While I did not want a super traditional coffee table with the turned legs, I am really drawn to this wood lamp. I think it brings the traditional element I need in the space.

How great is this pillow! I love the tribal pattern and the colors will work great with the rug. And the single tassel in the corner is so cute - it's like "I brought just enough decor to party, but not enough to get hungover"!

And again, keeping with the traditional style of the home, I needed to add this bold monogrammed statement pillow. It brings in a different shape and another blue tone to the space. Mixed with the fun patterned pillow below, keeps it feeling fresh and not too structured.

While this sign may look a bit Farmhouse (which our home is not), I think we need some "white" space on the brick fireplace. I like the rustic wood frame juxtaposed with the soft cursive font. Brings a "cozy" feeling into our family room.

And finally, my addition of sparkle. I did bring the sparkle in the giant chandelier, but I needed something else to draw your eye around the room. These mercury glass candlesticks will do just that!

The 3 main design elements that I bring to every room that I decorate is:

TEXTURE

COLOR

SPARKLE

Transitional Living Room Design Board

Transitional style is a marriage of traditional and contemporary furniture, finishes, materials and fabrics equating to a classic, timeless design. Furniture lines are simple yet sophisticated, featuring either straight lines or rounded profiles.

Here your traditional pieces would be the tables and chair. Your contemporary pieces would be the mercury glass lamps and the arrangement of mirrors. These mirrors will be sitting on top of a traditional fireplace mantel and arranging them in an overlapping way creates that contemporary look.

Click on the below images to be redirected for more product info and pricing!

I love this rug! It is available multiple sizes and would look great in any room. This rug could fall into tons of styles. It's colors lend it more to a modern space while it's pattern could be in a rustic area. It is the perfect combination for our transitional space!

These plantation chairs can be used in any room of the house. Use them as accent chairs in the family room or pair them in a formal living room as conversation chairs. They are so versatile they could always be used in a bedroom. The beaded wooden arms bring a texture to the piece and the plush cushions and arm rests bring a softness.

This large bold traditional coffee table is a great piece. The sharp square edges contrasts perfectly with the shapely turned legs. The plank-style top and lightly distressed corners give it a rustic element and it's size 54" x 40" make it a grand statement piece in any family or living room.

I am not a huge fan of matching end tables with the coffee table except in traditional spaces. And of course because I just love the style of these tables. It's also a great size to fit next to the sofa and a great height at 25" to rest a beverage and table lamp.

The mirror screams TRANSITIONAL to me. The shape is traditional but that shiny metallic frame is contemporary. It could be really fun over a vanity in a powder bathroom or over a fireplace mixed with other art pieces or mirrors like we plan to do with it in our space.

This starburst mirror brings so much life to the space. It's shape is funky and it's color is soft. I am really excited to mix it with the other mirrors choices. I could see this mirror in a traditional or even a farmhouse setting. Maybe at the front door or as an accent in a small hallway.

This 36" large fanned wood mirror is fabulous! It's rustic but shabby chic and brings that texture that I love so much. Texture is a large part of interior design that a lot of people forget about or don't think about when decorating a room. If you think your room could be missing something, throw in an element of texture!

Though she be small, she is fierce! This vase has it all. Shape, color, and texture! it combines the beiges and blues we already have going on in the room and brings in that texture I love so much! This could be placed on the coffee table with flowers, or simply as decor on a shelf.
Picture

Don't forget to added that much needed indoor plant to your space. No green thumb? No problem. There are plenty of life-like faux plants out there. Just change the base with something fabulous like this great blue pot and your decor is good to go!

I hit the jackpot with these distressed blue terracotta pillar candle holders! I love the varying sizes and again the colors and style are perfect for our space. A little rustic, a little traditional., a little fabulous!
Picture

Every family room needs a great ceiling fan and this one is beautiful. I am amazed at the amazing ceiling fans that designers have been coming out with. No simple white fan will do. We need style, we need color, and this one is it!

Did somebody say textured art?! My heart just skipped a beat. I love me some feather/leaf art and when combined with these sparkly mosaic tiles, I must have it! While this piece would definitely look great in a tropical themed room, I like it for any space - traditional? Yes! Modern? Yes! Rustic? Why not?!
Picture

Picture
I needed a lamp with some sparkle and nothing beats mercury glass! When the lamp is turned on it gives out a beautiful sparkle! This lamp is perfect for our transitional space, too because it has the white traditional shade, the rustic jug shape, and the sparkly modern glass base. Can't go wrong!

After finding the above table lamp, I knew I needed a coordinating floor lamp. I searched everywhere and finally found this one. It's shade matches perfectly in shade and color, and the base has just enough of that mercury glass to not be overwhelming. And the shape actually mimics the tradition turned legs of the coffee table! It's perfect!

Cottage Chic Sitting Area Design Board

I am calling this Cottage Chic! I love mixing styles, patterns, textures, etc. This sitting area is a mix of cottage and shabby chic decor. I started with the bold blue accents chairs, followed by the distressed area rug. The colors lean towards Cottage decor while the distresses leans towards shabby chic decor so I did a little bit of both.

Click on any of the below images to be redirected to its coordinating website to see product details and pricing! Contact me if you have any questions or are in need of design help!

I love how bold this chair is, not only in color but in size. It's wide frame looks super comfortable and those bolster pillows constrast perfectly with the modern straight back and arms. The bold navy color would be a statement maker in any room.

This rustic wood coffee table with its whitewashed finish and lattice detail is so dreamy. It brings in that creamy color from the rug and nice pattern that isn't too bold to take away from the room. The classic round shape will help with flow through the space.

This rug has everything I was looking for. The blue is the perfect shade to match with the chairs and the creams bring in a light and airiness to the room. The light distressing keeps it from becoming too bold and allows us to work the Shabby Chic style into the room.

We all have that blank wall that we can't decide what to put on it. You could do a large piece of art or create a gallery wall. Or add one of these beautiful bookshelves to display all of your home decor accessories. I always recommend throwing in some framed family photos to add your personal touch. Also, anything blue to bring the colors from the chairs and rug would be beautiful!

These side tables bring so much style all by themselves. I love playing with shapes so placing these next to those super straight chairs creates a great mix. The color works well all of the other elements to the room, too.

Top those side tables with some great lamps and you have the perfect area to have a conversation with guests or relax with a nice book. The base brings in another great shape to play with the eye when looking over this room.

I love these braided poof ottomans! Every room should have at least one. They are great for function (putting your feet up) and for adding that little bit of texture every room is usually missing. They can always act as extra seating or their the perfect size for lounging on during movies like my kids do.

Pillows are a great way to play with patterns. As long as they have the colors in the room, feel free to throw in as many different patterns as you want. Don't be afraid! They liven up the space and provide some glam you didn't know you needed! And who doesn't love a good peacock feather? This one just happens to be the perfect colors.

I also love me a good bird pattern. I don't know what it is about them but I love them. I have a bird dress, a couple bird shirts, lots of bird pillows, etc. They just make me and my rooms feel happy. This one is a nice subtle bird pattern and plays perfectly with the colors in the room.

You would think I am constantly worried about what time it is by the amount of clocks I put up in my designs but I am not. I usually don't even know what time is it and honestly I prefer clocks with numbers to read faster but they sure are beautiful when hanging on the wall. Most of the ones in my house don't even have batteries in them!

Another easy way to add texture to a room is with linen curtains. They don't have to have a pattern or be a bold color to make a statement. And when mixed with a sheer in the center, it dresses up the space beautifully. The combination of textured outer curtains with white sheer curtains in the center is very soothing and creates a soft glow in the room.

I love this potted topiary set. They can be setup like shown in a line on a shelf (Varying height is key to shelving display) or you can break them up and place them throughout the room. Place one in a tray on the coffee table with a book and a picture frame, use one as a bookend, or group a few together for shelving display.

This mirror from Pottery Barn is so versatile. You could place it horizontally over a console table or vertically on a blank wall just to take up some space. It could be used in a bedroom, seating area, dining room, etc. The colors would match with anything and play of shapes inside the mirror can be mixed into traditional or modern spaces.

Rustic Office Design Board

My last blog featured accent chairs I found on Amazon for under $300. It has inspired me to make a design board corresponding with each of the accent chairs I listed on that blog. Starting with the camel leather arm chair, I came up with this rustic office design.

Click on any image below to be redirected to the corresponding website to see product info and pricing.

I love this rustic desk! There is something about the top heavy look on the thin metal frame that intrigues my interest. Not only is it visually appealing, but it offers quite a bit of storage. I think this piece is equally beautiful and functional.

Every desk needs it own set of  organizational tools. This black metal wire 5-piece set is perfect for the rustic theme of this room and extremely functional. For $25 bucks you get a ton of pieces to keep your desk neat and tidy.

Even if your room is bright, it is important to have designated task lighting. Not only because this particular light is gorgeous but in the long run it will be better for your eyes to have proper lighting while your work. This rustic metal lamp is adjustable and will brighten up any space.

A good home office always has space for guests. While you would prefer for them not to stay long, you also do not want them hovering over your work area. This camel colored faux leather chair is the perfect space for them. Let them lounge comfortably while you discuss business or politics.

Depending on the size of your room, you could have this side table next to a single guest chair or between 2 of them. Since the chairs and arms are nice and square I recommend going with a square side table to follow the shape.

Let's not forget about the boss of the room. You will need a luxurious and comfortable executive chair to get your work done in. This one is not only the perfect color to coordinate with the guest chairs but it is flexible and adjustable and has a nice high back with head cushion.

Don't worry, this is a FAUX cowhide rug but it brings in a great shape and texture to the space while keeping with the rustic feel of the room. It helps break up those straight lines we have everywhere and softens the space with a soft fabric feel.

Every office needs a good wall clock to keep track of time. While this room is gorgeous and you will want to stay in there all day, you also don't want to be stuck working for hours on end. This trendy wall clock follows the straight lines of the room and the thin metal pieces keep the rustic theme.

There is usually an empty wall that needs to be filled and you probably have some items you would like to display. This bookshelf is the perfect combination of wood and metal and gives ample amount of display space. Add a small indoor plant to liven up the room and some framed family photographs to personalize your space.

While you may think this room is quite masculine and could only be for your husband or male colleague, I disagree. Find that rustic outdoors-man inside of you and bring it to life in this rustic themed office. Brighten up the shelving with pretty colors and plants and bring it some fresh flowers to enjoy while slaving away!

Rustic Contemporary Design Board

This client coined the phrase "Rustic Contemporary" as her style. My definition of contemporary is characterized by clean lines, simple shapes, pops of color, and clutter-free surfaces. My definition of rustic is featuring raw woods, wrought iron, sun-bleached colors and animal hides. This is a tricky combination but I think it came out fabulous!

She has this great piece of contemporary art with blues and silvers and whites. I wanted to make sure I kept that in mind so I put it at the top of my Design Board.

Starting in the kitchen, I needed a small round dining table in a warm wood tone. It is going in a pretty small nook area so I didn't want it to have a lot of legs when people are trying to slide around it. So I needed a pedestal table but most pedestal tables have very traditional bases. I was so excited when I came across this one. It gives off a rustic feel but the straight lines lean towards contemporary style.

Following the clean line idea, I found these great chairs with curved backs but with straight rod details. I think the color contrasts nicely and the shape coordinates with the round table perfectly. The barstools were a great find too. I love me a good swiveling barstool so when I found a similar style in a swivel, I almost jumped up and down.

Adding a chandelier to the mix was a bit difficult. This client leans towards sparkly lighting so incorporating her taste with the rustic style  came this beautiful wood and crystal globe chandelier. It brings the rustic feel with the wood material, the contemporary side with the straight sanded wood elements, and the sparkle in the hanging crystals. Win-Win!
The living room fireplace has floor-to-ceiling stone and an enormous 1980s central mirror. We plan to remove this old stone and mirror and replace with an updated product. We considered stacked stone or ledgestone tile mosaic but I think adding wood tile will really liven things up! Add the a polished black granite top to the hearth and we're all set.
In removing the stone, we will have to remove the built-in cabinet on the left side of the fireplace. I wanted to replace this with another wood and metal element. This bookshelf is the perfect height to fit right under the window above and reads the same language as the window on the opposite side of the fireplace. The X-framing keeps the contemporary feel alive.

The foyer leads you to a formal seating area. It needed some eye-catching furniture so I found this greatly patterned bright wing chair and fell in love. Paired together with the round wood and metal accent table in between will be a great statement maker when entering the home.

An empty wall adjacent to these chairs needed a bookshelf but when you walked into the home you would see the side of it. So I wanted to make sure we had something open and unique for this wall. This bookshelf appears to be floating and attaches to the wall with 2 metal posts. The addition of the crystal flushmount ceiling light (matching the metal in the bookshelf) will draw your up to some extra sparkle.

This Rustic Contemporary decor provides a comfortable unique setting that is sure to impress all of your guests and visitors!

Girly Glam Office & Guest Room Design Board

3/25/2020

Picture
This client was looking for a combination of adult work space and guest room with a touch of pink and glam.

We started with the discussion of a Murphy bed as an option for guests. Since the space available is not extremely large, I was concerned that the Murphy bed would take up too much space when not being in use. The option of using a day bed with a trundle bed came up and can be used as guest seating on a daily basis.

I found this great day bed on Joss & Main. It fits 2 twin-sized mattresses for 2 adult guests to sleep comfortably. It has a nice beige linen fabric bringing some texture to the room and the tufted rounded back and sides adds a sense of style.

Since I knew I would be adding tons of pink elements, I really wanted the desk to be very simple. I found this great white desk with simple X-designed cabinet doors on Wayfair. Not only does it have the clean simple lines I was looking for but it was the perfect size and offered a matching cabinet to hold the client's printer.

I drew this space in SketchUp (see images below) to make sure everything would fit. As you can see below, the door and window locations were quite tricky to work around but I think the layout I came up with will work great!

The requested pink elements started with the desk chair. Since this is an adult "Boss Lady's" office, I wanted it to be a nice blush color (not hot pink) and be a suitable size with arm rests and a soft cushion. Everything else just fell into place.

The rug, ottoman, bedding, curtains, and decor would be the blush pink color and the lighting (floor lamp and ceiling fan) would bring that glam sparkle the room needed. Together this room is perfect for the Boss to get her work done or for her guests to relax in.
